The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe will take up the situation in Belarus in the wake of country's December presidential elections without delay and will pass a resolution.
PACE decided to discuss the issue on Thursday, the chief Russian delegate to the Assembly Konstantin Kosachev has told reporters in Strasbourg.
The Liberals faction suggested debating the issue in this kind of format. The Belarusian authorities ordered the break-up of an unauthorized rally by the opposition in Minsk on December 19th, and the move came under scathing criticism from Europe.
The demonstrators protested against the presidential election returns, with incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko securing a victory for the fourth consecutive time.
