PRAGUE - The Czech Republic's foreign minister has strongly condemned the regime of Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko, and called for EU sanctions against it.
Karel Schwarzenberg says "it is not possible to tolerate a pure dictatorship in the 21st century" in Europe, following last month's widely criticized presidential election there and a crackdown on dissent.
Lukashenko won the Dec. 19 election with nearly 80 per cent of the vote, a poll widely regarded as fraudulent. Mass protests were violently dispersed by police, who arrested seven of nine opposition candidates.
Schwarzenberg said Thursday he would request tough EU measures against the regime's representatives.
