BRUSSELS - The European Union says it will impose an asset freeze and visa ban on 156 top Belarus officials in the wake of last month's flawed elections.
The 27 EU foreign ministers said at their monthly meeting on Monday that the measures against members of the government of Belarus' authoritarian President Alexander Lukashenko were taken to protest the jailing of opposition leaders and the violent crackdown following the Dec. 19 elections.
The EU stopped short of imposing economic sanctions against Belarus. Lukashenko had already threatened to retaliate if the EU imposes sanctions.
