Customs Union of Russia, Belarus Banned Wheat Export

The RF government has imposed a temporarily ban on the wheat export to the states that are members of the Customs Union, Interfax reported.

Russia's Prime Minister Viktor Zubkov inked the respective ruling February 18. The document was signed in line with Russia's-Belarus Customs Union Agreement of January 6, 1995 and the Federal Act on Foreign Trade Control. The ruling takes effect in a month after the promulgation.

The ban seems quite logical in light of the 40-percent increase in the wheat export duty, said Alexander Korbut, vice president of Russia's Grain Union. The purpose is to oppose the export of Russia's wheat via the Customs Union. "Otherwise, it will make no sense to contain the wheat export by a high duty," the official explained.

The export duty of 40 percent but at least ?105 per a ton will remain in force till April 30, 2008.
