MINSK. Feb 26 (Interfax) - Belarus will join Russia and Kazakhstan as co-founders of the Eurasian Development Bank, Tair Mansurov, the secretary general of the Eurasian Economic Community (EurAsEC), said on Tuesday following a meeting with Belarussian President Alexander Lukashenko.
"Belarus will exercise its right as a co-founder to be the bank's third member," he said.
Mansurov said Belarus had already passed a decision on being a co- founder of the bank and Lukashenko had already issued the appropriate instructions on the country's participation in the bank. "The bank should work for the Eurasian Economic Community and for all six of its members," he said.
Russia and Kazakhstan formed the EDB at the beginning of 2006. The bank was set up with the purpose of facilitating the robust development of the two countries' economies, sustaining high rates of economic growth, expanding mutual trade, developing other forms of economic relations, and encouraging direct investment, including on the basis of private-state partnership. The bank's charter capital amounts to $1.5 billion.
