For the fourth time since the beginning of 2007, someone vandalized a memorial to the 34,000 Jews the Nazis murdered in Brest, Belarus, according to a February 12, 2008 report by the Russian Jewish web site Jewish.ru. On February 11, vandals set the flowers surrounding the memorial on fire. Police are investigating the crime, but the head of the local Jewish community, Boris Bruk, is cited in the report as skeptical that they will solve the case, since none of the multiple incidents of vandalism over the past several years has led to any arrests. He added that he does not believe that the vandalism incidents are "acts of hooliganism" but are instead the work of a neo-fascist group.
