The government of Belarus is planning on allocating Br 78.6 bln (?28m) to provide schools with internet access and ICT infrastructure, reports E-Belarus.org.
Belarus' Council of Ministers Presidium met for a discussion of the draft programme of the modernization of the state educational system for 2007-2010 on 27 February 2007. The programme aims to create a unified computer network for all Belarusian schools, which will interact with state information systems through the Beltelecom data processing centre. Currently, only 42 per cent of schools in Belarus have internet access. The programme aims to set a 'social computerization standard,' with one PC per 30 students and one computer class for every school.
The ICT education programme will also support Belarus' e-government initiative, as internet-equipped schools will become internet access points for local e-government services.
