MINSK -- Belarusian antinuclear activists in the Mahilev region are calling for a national campaign against the construction of a new nuclear power plant, RFE/RL's Belarus Service reports.
The goal of the campaign is to inform citizens in Belarusian provinces about the government's plans to build a new nuclear plant near the western city of Hrodna.
A campaign organizer, Eduard Brokarav, told RFE/RL that previous attempts to rally people against the nuclear plant were poorly planned.
Brokarav said the current campaign will focus on direct talks with ordinary citizens.
Many in Belarus remember the 1986 Chornobyl disaster and therefore oppose the new nuclear plant.
Activists say many Belarusians in the provinces are unaware of the government's plan to build the nuclear power plant.
