Russia, Belarus leaders stay quiet on major loan

FOCUS News Agency

Zavinovo. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev met his Belarussian counterpart on Thursday and called for closer economic ties with Minsk but said nothing about a reported multibillion-dollar loan request AFP informs.

"We have reached some serious agreements which have economic, humanitarian and regional dimensions," Medvedev told Lukashenko ahead of the meeting, speaking in front of reporters.

"They now need to be implemented. They must be turned into contracts, deliveries, settlement of issues."

Lukashenko praised the "resolute steps" taken by the State Council of the Russia-Belarus Union, a body which nominally unites two ex-Soviet states.
