EU Commission gets approval to start visa talks with Belarus
The EU Council has authorized the EU Commission to enter negotiations with Belarus to facilitate visa processing, Interfax news agency reports. The negotiations will regard short term visas only. This assignment is in line with the EU’s January decision to maintain closer relations with Belarus citizens, while over one hundred top Belarusian officials were banned from entering the EU’s territory and had their assets frozen. Minsk was slammed by the EU over its latest presidential elections, which reinstalled President Lukashenko in office and were accompanied by harsh suppression of the Belarus opposition. The EU Council has also assigned the Commission to discuss the readmission process with Minsk.
