Commission to open negotiations on EU-Belarus visa facilitation
The European Commission will open negotiations for the conclusion of an agreement between the EU and Belarus on the facilitation of the issuance of short-stay visas, according to a press release from the EU Delegation to Belarus.
The Council of the European Union adopted the Decision authorising the Commission to open talks after a Recommendation by the Commission to the Council last November and its examination by the Working Party on Eastern Europe and Central Asia in early January, which concluded a basic consensus on the draft mandate, the press release said.
Council Conclusions on Belarus adopted in January stressed the importance of facilitating people-to-people contacts to the benefit of the Belarusian population at large, and looked forward to the start of negotiations for visa facilitation and readmission agreements with Belarus, once the negotiating directives have been adopted.
