The Center for Belarusian Studies at Southwestern College will host its inaugural lecture Saturday, April 19, when Stanislau Shushkevich speaks at 2 p.m. in Wichita's Hyatt Regency Hotel.
The first head of state of independent Belarus from 1991 to 1994, Shushkevic declared the dissolution of the Soviet Union with Boris Yeltsin and Leonid Kravchuk. With doctoral degrees in physics and mathematics, he also is an author and originator of award-winning textbooks, as well as more than 150 articles and 50 inventions.
