HA NOI - A delegation from Belarus today begins an official visit to Viet Nam at the invitation of the National Assembely Chairman Nguyen Van An.
The delegation, led by Chairman of the National Assembly Council of Belarus, Gennady Novitsky, follows upon mutual visits made by senior leaders of the two countries in recent years.
The two countries established diplomatic ties in 1992 following the independence of Belarus in 1991, and the relationship has developed well in recent years, continuing a tradition of friendship and cooperation begun more than 50 years ago.
Delegations from various sectors and agencies of the two countries have exchanged visits to find opportunities and promote investment and cooperation.
However, the trade relationship between the two nations has yet to become worthy with their potential. In 2004, the two countries' bilateral trade turnover reached US$30 million. Although the turnover increases yearly, it is still a small figure compared to what it could be.
Viet Nam exports to Belarus such goods as rubber, rice, seafood, tea, and cashews. The leading imports from Belarus are trucks and auto parts.
During the visit, the delegation will take time to familiarise itself with the operation of Viet Nam's agriculture and industry. - VNS
