US President George W. Bush today froze the US assets of hardline Belarus President Alexander Lukashenko and nine other individuals deemed obstacles to democracy in the former Soviet republic.
"There is simply no place in a Europe whole and free for a regime of this kind," Mr Bush said in a letter to the US Congress announcing his executive order, which affects assets held in the US or by US financial institutions.
