September 21, 2006 -- The press office of the former Belarusian presidential candidate Alyaksandr Kazulin says the jailed opposition leader began a hunger strike on September 20.
Kazulin reportedly wants the people of Belarus and the international community to recognize that the government of President Alyaksandr Lukashenka is illegal.
Kazulin is serving a five-and-a-half-year jail sentence for organizing an unsanctioned rally to protest against the reelection in March of Lukashenka in a vote condemned as unfree and unfair by the EU and the United States.
