The Republic of Belarus believes it is necessary to strengthen the role of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) as the centre for coordinating international practical efforts in responding to the global challenges that had arose in the economy, social development, environmental protection, Andrei Dapkyunas, permanent representative of the Republic of Belarus in the UN, said at a session of the UN General Assembly in New York, reported Belta.
The Belarusian official turned special attention to the necessity of a prompt ECOSOC top-level meeting to discuss the ways of overcoming the global financial crisis.
According to Andrei Dapkyunas, weakness of the existing mechanisms of economic development coordination in the international arena led to a multivariate global crisis in energy, foodstuffs and finances.
In his words, the crisis cannot be defused without putting radical reforms to the present system of the international financial institutions which free market principles are often dominate over the sustainable development of each country as a fundamental condition for the sustainable development of the global economy.
