VIENNA - Forensic experts say the evidence they have shows that a Belarusian journalist hung himself but more analysis and information may be needed to make sure that his death was a suicide.
Oleg Bebenin, the founder and chief editor of the popular opposition website Charter97, was found dead in September. Authorities say he committed suicide, but others allege he may have been murdered and his hanging staged amid a crackdown on government critics and independent media.
The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe said Tuesday that an analysis of existing case material and data by two independent experts found no reason to believe he was "hanged after death."
But it said the experts "noted some specific areas of possible further technical analysis" that Belarusian authorities should look into.
