KGB: foreign intelligence agencies stirred up activity in Belarus

The head of Information department of the Belarus KGB, Valery Nadtochayev, has informed that before forthcoming parliamentary elections of Belarus in 2008, activity of foreign intelligence has been stirred up in the country, news agency Interfax-AVN reports from Minsk.

In 2007, the KGB could prevent a number of attempts of gathering information in the country by foreign agents, Nadtochayev declared.

"Initially they were focused on processes of reforming of Belarus Armed forces, on performance of obligations taken by Belarus on withdrawal of nuclear weapons from its territory. Then their priorities have changed, though their interest has remained", official of the KGB of Belarus has declared. "Activity of foreign intelligence agencies and non-governmental organizations partially financed by intelligence agencies, has amplified during important public and political campaigns", Nadtochayev ascertained, according to Interfax-VN.

In opinion of the KGB of Belarus, it may be explained by desire of foreign opponents of the Belarus authorities to affect the situation in the country.

Nadtochayev marked that forthcoming parliamentary elections would be no exception in the meaning of the wish to influence political climate in Belarus. He said the KGB knows and has spoken out repeatedly that through the non-governmental organizations and institutes the special services have been financing Belarus opposition and arranging workshops for it.
