One of the last independent newspapers in Belarus, Novy Chas, is fighting in court to continue publication, according to Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty.
A Belarusian parliamentarian is suing Novy Chas for BYR500,000,000 (about US$232,000) in damages for an article he alleges was libelous. In addition, he is suing the article's author for BYR100,000,000 (about US$46,400).
Reporters without Borders has ranked Belarus as one of the world's worst press freedom violators. Belarus is ranked 151 on the organization's rankings of the world's 169 countries that are rated.
